My Top 5 Recommendations For Anyone Struggling With Pain Or Disease
This week I've been getting so many lovely comments on my presence ♥
Yesterday, a client at the organic shop where I'm working, suddenly looked me in the eyes and said 'Wow, you look great! What have you done? You have such a vibrant glow!'
The client I'm talking about has been a long-time regular customer. Since I started working at the organic shop, I've been through ups and downs. Just last Winter, I got infected with the Epstein-Barr virus, which caused my skin to flare up again after months of being 'clean'.
Before I got diagnosed with EBV, I didn't know what was happening and I was wondering what was making me feel so exhausted. As soon as I got the diagnosis though, I felt empowered and immediately started tackling the virus — which I did successfully in under 2 months! (1)
So I talked to this client about how I healed from EBV, how taking my time to rest and do a raw vegan cleanse paved my way for success so quickly. And how in general taking care of myself and eating whole plant foods make me feel so healthy and empowered. I told her that I feel so blessed to be where I'm at right now.
And this conversation in the organic shop wasn't the only one. Every day I've been getting compliments from friends, family and even strangers on how I'm 'shining with health'. These comments really mean a lot to me and I take them in with a lot of gratitude, because I've been working on myself so intensely over the past 3 years and I feel like something's really been shifting lately.
If you've been following my story, you probably know that over the past 3 years I've been experimenting with detoxing, I tried several therapies, supplements, diets, etc. Every day, I've been making progress. But at the same time, it always felt like I had to invest all my time and energy in that healing process, which could sometimes lead to frustration and overwhelm.
Over the past few months though, it feels like the healing continues to take place apart from my religious commitment to it. And that is so nice. I've been feeling remarkably more grounded and in alignment. I can let go more easily, and it takes me less effort to navigate through life.
It feels like I've finally found a way of eating that works really well for me, and I feel like I understand myself, my body, and how I interact with my environment, better than ever before. (Definitely not saying that I know it all now, or that this is the end destination... I just feel very relaxed with where I'm at, like I don't need to invest all my time and energy in figuring out new ways to make myself feel better.)
All this got me thinking back to where I started 3 years ago and the ups and downs I've been through. Everything that happened has been a crucial part of the process that lead me to where I am today.
Looking back to it, I asked myself this question: what would I want to tell myself 3 years ago?
What if you are still in pain and struggling to overcome disease? Where can you start so that you can feel better soon? From my own personal experience, and from working with clients one-on-one, I compiled a list of my top 5 starter tips.
I hope these tips are helpful to you in some way or another. Let me know what you would add to the list!
Much love & good vibes your way,
1. CHANGE YOUR STORY — GET INTO A POSITIVE MINDSET
Take responsibilty for your life. Be willing to let go of old destructive habits and allow new, positive vibes into your life. You have the power in your hands to create a better life for yourself. Freedom starts with the awareness that you really have a choice. Zoom out. Look at your current perspective, your self-image, your thoughts, your posture, the way you communicate. Ask yourself how your patterns and habits are shaping your life. What needs to change so that you can create the life that you're dreaming of?
3 years ago, before I decided to take my health in my own hands, life felt like a burden, like something that was happening to me, like I had to find a way to deal with the hardships that came my way.
The very first thing I learnt as I embarked on this journey, is that life is not what happens to us. It is what we make of it. I started working on shifting my perspective. I made it a daily practice to shift my mindset from victim to empowerment, from resentment to gratitude, from fear to faith, from doubt to clarity.
For me it always helps to write things down. To reflect upon what my dream future would look like, and then think how I could get there and break that down into small, attainable steps. Just this practice has helped me achieve almost any goal I set for myself:
- Clear up my eczema
- Heal from chronic headaches, nosebleeds, depression, anxiety, panic attacks
- Sleep through the night and wake up early with great energy
- Have steady energy throughout the day
- Be emotionally stable
- Create loving and compassionate relationships
- Be more confident & let go of fear of failure
- Protect my energy in stressful situations
Make a list from 1 - 3 with enough space in between them. Next to each number, write the 3 words 'what', 'why', and 'how' under each other.
- Now think of 3 things that you want to achieve between today and the next 3 months. Write these goals down next to 'what'.
- Why do you want to achieve this, what drives you, what motivates you? Write your answers next to 'why'.
- How will you make this happen, what steps will you take to achieve your goals? Write your answers next to 'how'.
Now you have a first action plan for your 3 goals.
2. TAKE ACTION
Educating yourself as much as you can, reading every natural health book, spending hours researching online... It's a noble skill and shows great dedication. But how often do you actually take consistent action on what you learn? How long do you give something a shot before you give up? Are you willing to push through the pain and discomfort, which are essential and necessary passages if you want to get to a better place?
If you want real change to take place, it is important to take action. What small step can you take today that will bring you closer to your goal? For example, if your goal is to have clear skin, one step can be to eat a healthier diet. And this step can be broken down into smaller, more attainable steps, like: start every day with a big glass of lemon water, have a green smoothie for breakfast, add a handful of leafy greens to every meal, replace sugary snacks with fresh fruits, etc. Pick one thing that you can do today, and take it from there.
Make sure you stay hydrated, all day every day. A good place to start is to make sure you always hydrate your body first thing in the morning with a tall glass of spring water with some lemon juice.
Good hydration is of crucial importance:
- For effective elimination of waste
- For optimal functioning of cells and systems
The more stress you experience (physical as well as mental and emotional stress), the more hydration you will need. Some tips to start with:
- Avoid tap water and opt for spring water (ideally from a clean local source, glass-bottled is a good second choice)
- Drink a big glass of fresh spring water + juice of half a lemon first thing in the morning: this stimulates elimination, hydration and production of digestive enzymes
- Drink a big glass of spring water 20 to 30 minutes before every meal
- Add more fresh, raw fruits and vegetables to your diet: these contain water in combination with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, which facilitates deep, cellular hydration
- Avoid refined table salt and opt for raw Celtic salt and naturally salty vegetables like celery and seaweeds instead
- Make sure your electrolytes sodium-potassium and calcium-magnesium are in balance: these function as conductors, i.e. they guide water into and out of the cell
Some highly hydrating and alkalizing foods are: aloe vera, leafy greens, celery, cucumber, melons, citrus fruits, and seaweeds.
4. FOCUS ON A WHOLEFOOD PLANT-BASED DIET
Add more fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs, and wild foods to your diet. They contain all the vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and other nutrients you need for a healthy body. Get a blood test done to see if you got any deficiencies and supplement where necessary!
Apart from your blood test results, there's four basic supplements I always recommend because deficiencies are so common due to soil depletion, pollution, modern lifestyle demands, increased stress and viral infections. These are:
5. MAKE SURE YOUR BODY IS DETOXING PROPERLY
I wrote an in-depth article about the hows and whys of detoxing, which you can read here. It is of such great importance to make sure your detox exits are clear, and that your body can get rid of waste safely and effectively to prevent toxins from being reabsorbed! In the article you will find out what lifestyle adjustments you can make to support your body's natural detox mechanisms.
BONUS — FIND SUPPORT!
Join a group of like-minded people, hire a health or life coach to guide you through any obstacles, get in touch with your community... When you feel supported and surrounded by people who 'get you', or maybe, have been where you are now but have gotten to the other side — it may be just what you need to keep moving forward when you feel like giving up.
As I started my journey, I became an engaged member of a handful of online communities, where I could ask for help and guidance in difficult times, and honestly, I wouldn't be where I am today if I wouldn't have had that support. (2)
Go find your community, get involved, and ask for help when you need it!
I love you so much, and I support you wherever you are ♥
