Last week, my mother invited us and a couple of friends to have dinner for her 51st birthday at a restaurant in Hasselt called Roberto Love And Food.
It's run by a friend of hers, the one and only Roberto himself, who has a passion for singing... and healthy food ;) Great coincidence, cause I'm always keen to discover new places and meet people with the same passion.
The restaurant is actually a 'living room restaurant' — meaning that it's all happening in Roberto's own living room!
And yes — the place really breathes love and food.
As we entered, we were welcomed by Roberto and his staff, who are all very warm and sympathetic people.
It almost felt as if we were having a family dinner. I like that — people who're just being who they are, with an open heart.
When the waiter asked what we wanted to drink, I had a look at the menu and saw that they had 'tea', but there were no specifications. So I asked what kind of tea they actually had — was it Lipton? It was the waiter's first day there, so he didn't know. He went back to the kitchen to ask Roberto if they had Lipton. Then I heard a gasp coming out of the kitchen with shortly after Roberto racing towards our table, theatrically shocked, exclaiming 'Who here wants to drink Lipton tea?!'
Then I knew he must be an outright Lipton nonfan just like me — awesome! I explained I asked for Lipton because that's exactly what I don't want. He insured that he would absolutely not serve Lipton and brought over the 'Real Tea Box', which was filled with all kinds organic Yogi teas — yum!
Aight, this is a place I totally appreciate. Warm atmosphere, real people, organic tea... Yep. Bring it on.
The menu was limited to a number of starters, main dishes and desserts. Most are vegetarian, some are vegan and some contain fish. Roberto cooks with sustainably sourced fish and organic ingredients only. Also, if you have a food allergy or specific wishes or needs, you just have to ask the staff if they can prepare something without gluten/ dairy/ sugar etc.
For starter, I had the smoked tempeh salad. For main dish we chose the dish of the day, which consisted of a salad, sautéed vegetables, vegetable puree, ratatouille and vegetable empanada. For dessert we had soy ice cream w/ fresh strawberries and a strawberry-rhubarb crumble (totally recommend this piece of yum — drool).
Clearly, if you ever find yourself Hungry in Hasselt, I recommend you go check out this haven of real Food and Love! The staff is super sympathetic and the food tastes great ♥ It's just a five-minute walk from the train station!
Wish you a lovely weekend guys x
