Yum-may! This morning I made this smoothie for the second time and I must say, it is a sweet sweet satisfier. I started adding maca to my smoothies two weeks ago, since I heard it’s a great adaptogen.

What is an adaptogen? It basically means that it’s a substance that helps your body to adapt more easily to challenging situations by supporting your adrenal system to create a more balanced stress response.

The maca root is an example of an adaptogen that’s been widely used to increase energy, stamina, athletic performance and to help restore fertility and a healthy sex drive. Yep, I declare to the World Wide Web: it's one of the things I struggle with.

Since I quit birth control one year ago, I didn't have my period for an entire year — except for a really light one after I had a colonic session last summer. SO I realized that my hormones were entirely out of whack and as I always do, I wanted to restore my body naturally.

And guess what? Last week, I got my period again! And not just a faint one — I mean man, I was bleeding! I've never felt more like a woman warrior in my life.

Anyway, I’ll dedicate another post to this topic some time soon, ‘cause I guess it’s not only the maca that did the job ;) For now, let’s just sit back, chillax and enjoy the tropically sweet taste of this wonderful smoothie.


HORMONE-BALANCING MANGO MACA SMOOTHIE (serves 2)

Note: this smoothie makes about six (!) cups and so it will definitely serve two hungry people. Or one starving person.

Equipment

Your favourite blender.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups almond milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp golden flax seeds (optional)
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 3 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 3 tbsp pumpkin seeds, soaked for 6-8 hours, then drained and rinsed
  • 1 mango
  • 1 very ripe banana
  • 1 tbsp maca
  • 1 tbsp cold-pressed virgin coconut oil (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (definitely add more if you like cinnamon)
  • pinch of salt

Recipe

Throw all ingredients in your blender, blend, and enjoy! I decorated with wild violets — because when your food looks lovely, you get extra soul nourishment, too :)
